Wolff reveals reasons behind Mercedes’ ‘dominant’ 1-3 in Montreal

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has shed light on the team's "dominant" performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, a victory that saw George Russell convert pole position into his fourth career win, fending off Max Verstappen and a post-race Red Bull protest. This marked Mercedes' first win of the season. Wolff attributed their success partly to a new rear suspension, first introduced at Imola, which aimed to combat rear tyre overheating. While admitting it wasn't a "magic solution," he highlighted its positive impact alongside the specific characteristics of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Montreal's layout, lacking typical high-speed corners where Mercedes usually struggles with heat, and its smooth, less abrasive asphalt, which minimizes rear tyre degradation, were key factors. Despite the strong showing, Wolff remains cautious, emphasizing that performance swings are still prevalent and that upcoming races, like Austria, will present different challenges. The 40 points gained in Montreal propelled Mercedes back to P2 in the Constructors' standings, though a significant gap remains to leaders McLaren.
