Piastri leads McLaren 1-2 from Norris in Spanish GP amid late-race drama for Verstappen and Russell

Oscar Piastri has significantly extended his championship lead with a dominant victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, leading a McLaren 1-2 finish alongside teammate Lando Norris. The race concluded with high drama, including a collision between Max Verstappen and George Russell. Piastri started from pole and built an early lead. While Verstappen briefly took the lead after the first pit stops, a Safety Car deployment for Kimi Antonelli’s mechanical issue in the latter stages reshuffled the field. Most frontrunners, including the McLarens, pitted again. At the restart, Piastri and Norris pulled away, while Verstappen dropped to third after contact with Charles Leclerc, then battled Russell, leading to a collision and a 10-second penalty for Verstappen, dropping him to P10. Piastri secured his fifth win of the season, followed by Norris in second and Leclerc in third. Nico Hulkenberg impressed with a fifth-place finish, while Fernando Alonso scored his first points of the season in ninth. This result gives Piastri a 10-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship, with Verstappen now 49 points behind.
