Watch highlights as Russell claims Canadian GP pole

George Russell has clinched his first pole position of the 2025 season at the Canadian Grand Prix, in a nail-biting qualifying session that saw him edge out Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri. The Mercedes driver delivered a phenomenal final lap, clocking in at 1m 10.899s. This impressive effort left him with a comfortable 0.160s lead over Verstappen, as both competitors opted for medium tires in the crucial closing moments. Piastri, currently leading the Drivers' Championship, showcased a strong performance, improving on his final run with soft compound tires, but ultimately secured third place, two tenths behind Russell. His McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, faced a less fortunate session, qualifying seventh after failing to improve on his last attempt. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start eighth, having also struggled to improve his time due to an oversteer moment, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton secured a respectable fifth position on the grid. The qualifying session was filled with drama and showcased the intense competition expected for the race.
