Horner praises ‘squeaky clean’ Verstappen after P2 finish in Canada

Christian Horner expressed satisfaction with Max Verstappen's clean drive in Montreal, as the Dutchman converted his P2 grid slot into a second-place finish, narrowly missing out on challenging George Russell for the win. Much had been made of the two rivals sharing the front row, but both kept the opening lap clean, with Verstappen maintaining pressure on Russell while defending from Kimi Antonelli. Verstappen's aggressive strategy, involving an early pit stop to undercut Russell, ultimately proved unsuccessful. Nonetheless, Red Bull demonstrated superior pace against McLaren and Ferrari, securing Verstappen's fifth podium of the season. Horner noted that the second stint was their least competitive due to tire graining, but the final stint was strong, matching Russell's pace. Red Bull lodged a protest against Russell's driving behind the Safety Car, a team decision not initiated by Verstappen. Horner clarified that the protest was not personal but based on the clear regulations regarding Safety Car procedures. Although the stewards found no case to answer, Verstappen's second-place finish allowed him to close the championship gap on Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
