Piastri labels Norris clash in Canada ‘a shame for the team’
The Canadian Grand Prix saw an unfortunate first for McLaren this season, as team-mates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided, marking a challenging weekend for the papaya team. McLaren struggled to find their rhythm at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, with Mercedes appearing to have an edge in the cooler conditions.
Piastri qualified third and Norris seventh. In the race, Piastri was initially overtaken by Kimi Antonelli. Later, Norris caught up, and in an attempt to pass, made contact with the rear of Piastri’s car, forcing Norris to retire with damage.
Piastri, who continued to finish fourth, commented, “I was defending the inside and then felt a small touch and that’s honestly all I have at the moment. Obviously a shame for the team. It was a bit of a difficult race apart from that. Just not the easiest of weekends.”
Despite the collision, Piastri’s fourth-place finish allowed him to extend his lead over Norris in the standings. While this was Piastri's first non-podium finish since the season opener in Melbourne, he acknowledged the need to make the most of the result in a challenging weekend for the team.
