FP2: Piastri tops the timesheets ahead of Russell and Verstappen during second practice in Spain
Oscar Piastri concluded Friday's running at the Spanish Grand Prix at the top of the leaderboard, setting the fastest time in Second Practice. The McLaren driver's impressive 1:12.760s lap put him nearly three-tenths clear of Mercedes' George Russell and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, showcasing McLaren's strong form after Lando Norris topped FP1.
The session, held in hot and humid conditions, saw all 20 drivers out early, mostly on medium tyres. Mid-session, as teams switched to soft tyres for qualifying simulations, the pace intensified. Piastri's dominant lap secured his P1 position, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli rounded out the top six. Home favourite Fernando Alonso finished seventh.
The session wasn't without its incidents and frustrations; Ollie Bearman spun into the gravel, and traffic issues irked both Isack Hadjar and Fernando Alonso, with the latter sarcastically remarking on Lewis Hamilton's impeding. Hamilton himself had a subdued session, finishing 11th.
With Friday's data now collected, teams will refine their setups for Saturday's final practice and crucial qualifying session, aiming to carry this momentum into what promises to be a thrilling weekend in Barcelona.
