RACE START: Watch the getaway in Spain as Piastri keeps the lead while Norris loses out to Verstappen
The Spanish Grand Prix kicked off with a dramatic start as polesitter Lando Norris, despite his strong qualifying performance, endured a poor getaway at lights out, allowing his rivals to capitalize. Teammate Oscar Piastri, however, executed a perfect launch, maintaining his position.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen wasted no time, roaring past Norris to claim second place on track, immediately putting pressure on the McLaren ahead. George Russell, who famously charged from fourth to first at this circuit last season, also had a challenging opening lap, being overtaken by both Ferrari drivers.
Lewis Hamilton showed strong early pace, improving to P4 with Charles Leclerc closely behind. The decision by all teams to start on soft tyres led to a flurry of aggressive moves and position changes throughout the field. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli was seen briefly off the circuit, dropping back to P7 just behind his teammate. The chaotic opening lap set the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating race in Spain.
