Rosberg gives his take on Norris/Piastri clash
Former F1 World Champion Nico Rosberg has offered his insights following a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix, a race that saw his former team, Mercedes, secure a dominant victory and McLaren experience a significant intra-team incident.
George Russell not only claimed pole position but also the race win at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, a track where Mercedes debuted a new rear suspension aimed at optimizing tyre temperatures. His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, further bolstered the team's success by securing his maiden F1 podium. This strong performance by Mercedes came amidst a dramatic collision between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the closing stages. The incident forced Norris out of the race, while Piastri managed to finish fourth, extending his championship lead to 22 points.
Rosberg, present as a Sky Sports F1 pundit, shared his thoughts exclusively with F1.com. He pondered Mercedes' resurgence, suggesting their new geometry might be the key to their improved performance. Regarding the championship battle, Rosberg now views Piastri as the favorite, praising his consistency and flawless execution. He attributed the collision between Norris and Piastri to a "strange misjudgement" by Norris, possibly due to mental fatigue in a demanding race.
Despite Piastri's lead, Rosberg hasn't ruled out Max Verstappen, who finished second between the Mercedes drivers. However, Rosberg emphasized Verstappen's need for a more competitive car to challenge for a record-equalling fifth title.
