Regulatory changes agreed at latest F1 Commission meeting

The Formula 1 Commission met in London on Monday to discuss regulatory refinements for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Led by FIA official Nikolas Tombazis and FOM CEO Stefano Domenicali, the commission approved minor updates to the 2026 Sporting and Financial Regulations. For 2027, significant adjustments include a reduction in total race distance from 305km to 290km to align with new Power Unit fuel flow regulations. Furthermore, the commission addressed race disruptions caused by weather, deciding to remove the three-hour total event time limit while maintaining the two-hour limit for actual racing, and introduced a hard stop time for all sessions. Free Practice sessions will also see increased flexibility for potential extensions. Additionally, the commission agreed to remove gearbox homologation starting in 2027 to encourage supplier innovation. All these proposed changes now await formal ratification by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
