Jacky Ickx on life at Ferrari and starring at Le Mans
Legendary Belgian driver Jacky Ickx is the latest guest on the Beyond The Grid podcast, sharing his remarkable journey in motorsport. Despite not initially aspiring to be a racer, Ickx became Belgium's most successful F1 driver, securing eight Grand Prix wins and twice finishing as championship runner-up.
His versatility extended beyond F1, with multiple victories in Le Mans, the World Endurance Championship, and even the Paris-Dakar rally. Ickx recounts his unusual F1 debut in an F2 car at the 1966 German GP, his complex relationship with Ferrari, including joining, leaving, and rejoining the team, and his feelings about finishing second to posthumous champion Jochen Rindt in 1970. He also details his powerful one-man protest at Le Mans, which significantly enhanced race safety.
