Piastri explains shock pre-race crash in Australia
Oscar Piastri's home Grand Prix dream ended prematurely after a dramatic crash during the reconnaissance laps at Albert Park. The McLaren driver, who had qualified fifth, lost control at the exit of Turn 4 and hit the concrete wall, causing significant damage that ruled him out of the race before it even began. Piastri attributed the incident to a "combination of bad factors," including getting on the kerb and experiencing an unexpected 100 kW power surge at the point of shifting, which led to wheelspin. He expressed profound disappointment, especially given it was his home event. Consequently, his teammate Lando Norris was McLaren's sole representative, finishing fifth in the race.
