Verstappen explains if he's concerned by deficit to Mercedes
Max Verstappen showcased a remarkable recovery drive at the Australian Grand Prix, climbing from a P20 start to finish P6 and secure eight crucial points for Red Bull. His impressive charge followed a Q1 crash that forced him to start from the back, yet he masterfully gained 14 positions throughout the race.
Despite the strong performance, Verstappen acknowledged a significant gap to the winning Mercedes of George Russell, finishing over 54 seconds adrift. He expressed no concern over Mercedes' early advantage, stating his focus is on working with the team to close the gap step by step. Verstappen also noted that the race provided valuable lessons on navigating the new cars and executing overtakes, despite a two-stop strategy forced by high degradation and graining on the hard compounds. His teammate, Isack Hadjar, unfortunately retired from the race.
