EXPLAINED: The new key terms for F1’s new-for-2026 rules

Formula 1 is set for a significant overhaul in 2026 with new aerodynamic and power unit regulations introducing fresh terminology and driving dynamics. Key changes include the "Boost Button," which allows drivers to activate maximum power strategically for attack or defense, and a new "Overtake Mode." This mode, usable when within one second of a rival, grants extra electrical energy for a sustained speed advantage on the following lap. Cars will feature "Active Aero" for the first time, dynamically adjusting front and rear wing angles to reduce drag on straights and maintain downforce in corners, effectively replacing the current DRS system. Drivers will also have more control over battery recharging modes.
