Earlier this year, Verstappen was briefly linked with Mercedes amidst Red Bull's inconsistent start to the 2025 season. Despite Wolff publicly entertaining the hypothetical "Russell/Verstappen line-up" as a "Prost/Senna" scenario, Verstappen swiftly confirmed his commitment to Red Bull through the 2026 season, honoring his existing contract until 2028. Wolff later downplayed the intensity of their summer talks. He also commented on Verstappen's current championship hopes, noting his recent wins but stressing the considerable points gap to Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
