Why race starts will be different in 2026

Formula 1 will implement a tweaked race start procedure for the 2026 season due to significant power unit changes. The removal of the MGU-H means turbos now rely solely on exhaust gases, potentially causing lag at the start. To ensure drivers can achieve full power off the line, a new pre-start warning will be introduced. Once cars are on the grid, all grid panels will flash blue for five seconds, giving drivers crucial time to build engine revs and spool up the turbo before the traditional start lights.
