How every corner at Spa-Francorchamps got its name
Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, a deep dive into the history of the legendary Spa-Francorchamps reveals that many of its iconic corner names are rooted in local geography and regional heritage. From the 'red water' of Eau Rouge to the steep incline of Raidillon, the track is defined by its landscape, with names like La Source, Malmedy, and Fagnes referencing the surrounding nature and nearby towns.
Some sections have evolved through time, such as the once-nameless Turn 9, now dedicated to Belgian legend Jacky Ickx, and the Campus corner, formerly known as Stavelot. Even the final chicane carries a rich history; though it was redesigned in 2007, it retains its 'Bus Stop' moniker from its days as a public road, underscoring the unique character and storied evolution of one of Formula 1's most revered circuits.
