How 46 fashion designers reimagined McLaren’s F1 history
McLaren recently hosted a unique fashion show titled 'Designed to Race: Front Row' at the McLaren Technology Centre, featuring 12 looks created by 46 MA fashion students from Central Saint Martins. The collection drew inspiration from over six decades of team history, ranging from James Hunt’s rebellious 1970s style and Ayrton Senna’s iconic yellow helmet to the modern 'Papaya' era and contemporary fan culture.
McLaren Racing Chief Marketing Officer Louise McEwen emphasized that the collaboration was about bridging the worlds of high-performance engineering and creative arts. The students, divided into 12 groups, used materials like carbon fiber, upcycled seatbelts, and team apparel to interpret McLaren’s heritage. The show highlighted how Formula 1 is evolving to engage a younger, more diverse audience that increasingly views fashion as an essential medium for expressing their fandom.
