Inside Rwanda’s plan for the African Grand Prix
Formula 1 is officially returning to the African continent in the early 2030s, following a landmark 10-year agreement with Rwanda to host the African Grand Prix. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali hailed the announcement as one of the most significant moments in the sport's history, as the championship seeks long-term viability and a true multi-continental presence.
Rwanda's President Paul Kagame and Rwanda Development Board CEO Jean-Guy Afrika emphasized that the event is designed to benefit not just Rwanda, but the entire African continent. By naming the event the African Grand Prix, organizers hope to pave the way for future motorsport growth and inspire younger generations across the region to experience Formula 1 in person.
The new 6km anti-clockwise circuit will be located in Bugesera, taking advantage of the region's stunning natural topography characterized by hills and lakes. Designed by Tilke Engineering and Wurz Designs, the track will feature 17 corners, significant elevation changes, and unique architectural elements, promising a thrilling challenge for drivers and an immersive experience for spectators.
