What do the new lights on F1 cars mean?

Formula 1 is set to introduce innovative new rear and side lighting systems for the 2026 cars, aiming to enhance both safety and strategic information. The central Rear Indicator System (RIS) will primarily display red, but its new design allows for color changes and various flashing sequences. It will communicate critical power unit energy levels to following drivers, indicating MGU-K power delivery or recharging status. Additionally, the RIS can signal safety car periods, double yellow flags, engine stalls, or even tyre choices. A blue light will indicate a driver without a full super licence, useful for rookie sessions. Complementing these are new amber lateral safety lights on the mirrors, developed from driver feedback. These will activate during spins, accidents, or when a car's speed drops below 20kph, ensuring visibility from all angles, particularly in adverse weather conditions.
