6 Winners and 5 Losers from Spain – Who bossed it in Barcelona?
Oscar Piastri dominated the Spanish Grand Prix, securing a crucial victory that extends his championship lead. The Australian driver, who had a challenging experience in Barcelona last year, erased those memories with a stellar performance, claiming pole position by the largest margin of the season (0.209s) and converting it into his fifth Grand Prix win. This triumph marks his eighth consecutive podium finish, placing him in an elite group alongside Ayrton Senna and Lewis Hamilton.
Conversely, Max Verstappen endured a frustrating weekend. Failing to secure a front-row start in Barcelona since 2020, his race unravelled despite a strong start. A controversial hard-tyre strategy and a subsequent clash with George Russell resulted in a 10-second time penalty, dropping him to 10th and pushing him closer to a race ban. Verstappen acknowledged his error, attributing it to high emotions.
Nico Hulkenberg was a notable winner, overcoming a poor qualifying session to climb five places and secure an impressive P5 finish, Kick Sauber's best result since 2022. Williams, however, saw their recent scoring streak end with both cars suffering damage. Charles Leclerc secured a podium finish for Ferrari, while Kimi Antonelli's race was cut short by a power unit issue. Isack Hadjar continued his strong rookie season with another points finish, but Lewis Hamilton struggled for pace, finishing a disappointing P6. Fernando Alonso finally broke his points drought with a P9 finish, while Yuki Tsunoda had a weekend to forget, starting from the pit lane and failing to score. Pierre Gasly brought some cheer to Alpine with a P8 finish, marking only their second points-scoring race of the season.
