What tyres will drivers have for the Canadian GP?
Pirelli has unveiled its tyre compound selection for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, bringing the new-for-2025 C6 soft compound into play. This marks the third appearance for the C6, following its debut in Imola and subsequent use in Monaco. Drivers will have access to the C4 (hard), C5 (medium), and C6 (soft) tyres, with an allocation of two hard, three medium, and eight soft sets. Intermediate and full wet tyres will also be available should weather conditions demand them. An additional set of softs is reserved for Q3 participants, and all drivers must utilize at least two different slick compounds during a dry race.
Pirelli's preview highlights the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve's unique characteristics. The track features medium-to-low lateral forces but more severe longitudinal forces due to sharp deceleration followed by strong acceleration. The surface is noted as very smooth and non-abrasive, primarily used only for the Grand Prix weekend. Graining could be an initial concern, especially during Friday's Free Practice, but is expected to diminish as the track rubbers-in. Lap times are anticipated to improve rapidly throughout sessions. Moreover, Montreal's notoriously unpredictable and changeable weather, coupled with fluctuating temperatures, adds a significant strategic wildcard for teams and drivers.
