The 'unusual' reason behind Hulkenberg's DNF in Barcelona
Nico Hulkenberg's hopes for a points finish at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix were cruelly dashed in a bizarre incident on Lap 28. While battling with Liam Lawson for ninth place, the Racing Bulls driver ran wide at Turn 12, sending a spray of gravel into the path of the Audi car behind him.
In a freak occurrence, the flying debris struck the car's external emergency fire switch, triggering an automatic safety shutdown of the R26. Hulkenberg was forced to coast into the pits and retire from a race where he had shown competitive pace throughout the weekend.
Audi Racing Director Allan McNish confirmed the incident was purely a stroke of bad luck rather than a mechanical failure. While teammates Gabriel Bortoleto finished 11th and rivals like Alpine and Racing Bulls scored points, the team remains optimistic, viewing their strong pace as a positive sign for the remainder of the season.
