Why Russell avoided an investigation over yellow flags
George Russell secured a brilliant pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after a chaotic qualifying session. When Max Verstappen crashed at Turn 9, yellow flags were displayed, forcing the drivers to navigate the hazard safely. Russell successfully demonstrated to stewards that he had lifted off the throttle and slowed down significantly, allowing his lap time to stand and keeping him on pole.
Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, however, mistakenly perceived the signal as a double-waved yellow flag. Out of caution, he completely abandoned his lap to comply with the stricter safety rules, ultimately missing out on a potential front-row start and settling for fourth. Toto Wolff praised Russell's experience in managing the incident, while acknowledging Antonelli's frustration in what was otherwise a dominant weekend for the young Italian.
