Have Mercedes pioneered a left-field solution with the W17?
F1 technical expert Mark Hughes has provided an initial assessment of the Mercedes W17 design, based on recently released renders. The W17 showcases a distinctive approach, particularly in its rear three-quarters, featuring lower bodywork that kinks upwards—a stark contrast to the extreme downwash seen in other 2026 concepts. Mercedes appears to retain pushrod front suspension, a common choice for new regulations due to weight considerations. The design also suggests a strong commitment to rear downforce generation and an in-washing floor board. However, as these are merely renders, questions remain whether this represents a pioneering 'left-field' solution or if the images are intentionally misleading ahead of the real car's debut.
